What's the best way to bring out the natural curls and waves in my hair?

I have shoulder length lightly layered hair which I generally straighten and wear down. But I would like to wear my hair curly. It's naturally wavy/curly, but the curls are messy, and my hair is rather poofy before I straighten it. Not to mention that the curls mostly disappear into one big poof when I brush my hair. I have a CHI straighten, which I've heard curls hair as well, but I've had trouble with it. I also thought that a mousse or something would be helpful, but I don't know what kind to get. Any suggestions?

When you want to wear it curly, wash and condition it and brush it with a vent brush or your fingers. Nothing fine like a comb. I use Frizz Ease curl reviver. It does wonders. After showering, I put a little defining gel (medium hold) and then spray the Frizz ease and smooth through. It curls right up. My hair is short. So it might not be as curly for long hair but. The Frizz Ease stuff is great. Also, never brush your hair after it is dry if you want to wear it curly. It just frizzes up like mad.

Also, blow dry with a diffuser and use your hands to scrunch.

Maybe scrunch it? I have Garnier Fructis curl-enhancing mousse (strong), and I put it in my hair and grab it; "scrunch" it to my head while lightly blow drying it. It creates natural waves.. I hope that was a bit helpful. Good luck!

1. I never use hair products with alcohol in it, as our hair tends to be naturally dry.

2. I never use a hair-dryer, as this will also dry out our hair, and let my hair dry out naturally.

3. I use a leave-in conditioner everyday.

4. I NEVER brush my hair when it's dry, only when my hair is wet or damp....that's when it gets all puffy and frizzy.

5. I use some creams, to off set the fuzz like Frizz-Ease, Sebastian Potion No.9, Biosilk Silk Therapy, Bumble %26amp; Bumble Curl Creme. Not all at once of course! I change it up every few days.

Hope it helps!

Use Aveda Be Curly. Mix with a little hair gel (for hold) and work it into damp clean well conditioned hair. Air dry or blow dry with the diffuser attachment. You will get wonderful, well defined curls, minus the poof!

Use products like Frieda, etc. that are meant to define curls, and use flexi rollers for definition with a light holding product that wont make hair look stiff. If you use a bad mousse or gel you will look like you have a perm. The flexi-rod rollers will provide a great shape to your curls, and they will look better.

Also for curly hair you comb/brush when wet, after hair is dry you just finger style or you will end up with a poofy mess.
